What are electrolytes for?

Electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium and others) are minerals that keep your fluid balance and help muscles contract and nerves fire. Heavy sweating loses them along with water, and water alone can't always replace them — so they come up around exercise and hot conditions. If your everyday diet is adequate, they aren't essential.
