What do omega-3s (EPA/DHA) actually do?

Omega-3s are essential fats the body can barely make itself, and they form part of the membrane around every cell. DHA is concentrated in the brain, retina and nerves and supports their function, while EPA is involved in blood-lipid balance. People who eat little fish can fall short, so some top up with fish oil — a common guide is 500–1,000 mg combined EPA+DHA a day with food.
